OPEN HOUSE Sunday, May 18, 2008 2 pm to 5:30 pm Not sure what camp is all about or can't spend enough time at camp? Come join us for a fun filled afternoon! Our open house is a chance for parents, campers, youth groups, and old and new friendsd to enjoy a day sampling some of the varied activities at Holmes Presbyterian Camp & Conference Center. Come meet the staff and if weather permits, we plan to go boating, play games, go hiking, etc. Food will be grilling and available all afternoon. Hope to see you there! We have also extended a special discount for all campers who sign up and pay in full on that day.
There's no place like Holmes!
Our cabins are equipped with kitchenettes so groups never have to leave the comfort of their own cabin, however, meals can be provided by our kitchen staff with advanced notice. The Presbyterian Center has 550 acres and over 7 miles of well marked trails accompanied by a site map. Canoeing, paddle boating and swimming are always a
favorite with the kids as well as the adults. The Center has four lakes where the fishing is always great or just sit on the shoreline and reflect. Our High & Low Ropes courses are a fun challenge in a non-competitive, non-judgmental environment. The basic goals of the Ropes and Initiative Courses are to help participants increase their level of confidence, learn to function meaningfully and productively in a group setting, develop an increased level of understanding and appreciation for the natural environment and instill a feeling of fun through adventure education. There are many golf courses in the area, from Par 3 to championship courses as well as many historic sites. Call 845-878-6383 for reservations. Mention your Presbytery connection for reduced rates.
As you begin to plan your new year, think of all the children who would love to come to camp, but can’t afford it, and include them in your planning. It is as easy as sending a check to the Center’s "Campership Fund." Also, go to your church and make sure they provide camperships for any child in your congregation who would otherwise be unable to go to camp. Any way you can help a child is giving a gift for life.
Many of our projects last year were completed with the wonderful help of "work camps." At the Center there are always projects which are perfect for a "work camp" weekend or we have projects that could keep you busy for the whole week! Spring is always the busiest time of year for us, and many hands make light work. We would supply housing and would ask that you cover the cost of meals. Call the Center for more information, 845-878-6383. Many thanks to: Last Fall the Presbyterian Center was blessed with a wonderful contribution to its ministry. A neighbor of the Center donated over 30 acres of wooded property with a smaller parcel that is on the shore of Lake Dutchess. On May 20, 2006, the Alumni Work Group project was to cut a trail through the property and construct a bridge to navigate a stream on the trail. This will now be known as the "Purple Trail" and was used by many of the campers this summer. It has allowed us to expand our programming and we utilized the Lake Dutchess this summer with our Junior Canoe Camp. 1st Presbyterian Church of Livonia were 9 strong and did an amazing job painting Cabin #14 and hanging new swings at the Nunemaker Center which were donated by our summer camp nurse, Sandy Miller.
We want to reconnect with the "friends and family" of the Center. If you have not been getting our newsletters and announcements, you are probably not on our mailing list. Please let us know if we need to correct your address, add you to our list, or, if you know other people who would like to receive our mailings, give us their names & addresses. As we continue to get the facility in tip-top shape, we can use your help. We can always use groups or individuals to come and paint (interior and exterior), clear trails, mow lawns and garden, and do other odd jobs around the site. Adult and youth workgroups will find we have small jobs which can be weekend projects. Ministers are especially encouraged to volunteer, as a way for children and youth to get to know clergy in a more informal setting. We are required by our accreditation to have all volunteers fill out an application. Click here to go directly to "Volunteer Application." This will also enable us to schedule volunteers at times when they will be best utilized. If you are interested, please call (845) 878-6383, and we will be pleased to respond with more information.
